This image manages to show the scale of the environment and still allow the character to stand out using colour. The character is simple and doesn't show any facial features or emotion but the legs give the impression of striding like the character is on a journey. The slight angle of the trees and the colours make the landscape seem cold and uninviting. The textures make this environment seem more natural, if the trees were vectors it would not have the same effect.
The image is quite subtle in terms of the story behind it, it creates intrigue in the scenario the character is in.
I like this image, it contains lots of detail and information but manages to be highlight key elements within the composition using sharp contrasts in colour and negative space. The lighthouse is prominent against an off white background. The artist uses the large amount of detail in the lower part of the composition to show movement and suggest the outline of a complex creature. The problem of large amounts of detail and information becoming confusing has been used in this case to aid the composition. this shows that the practices I am trying to steer away from at the moment do have a use within my practice but need to be employed only when they are beneficial to the piece.
I need to gain a better understanding of how, when and why I should apply techniques and style that suite subject matter. I must avoid trying to force a link between how I want to draw something and the message it is meant to communicate, I want to create work that forges a bond between the two with both parts benefiting from the others company.
