Pinterest Images 2

I am still struggling to simplify my compositions and wanted to research artists that manage to communicate ideas without the use of over-complicated images.

This pretty much sums up how I work. I start out with a simple idea that I think will communicate the emotion and concepts I want then gradually over time add more and more elements to the composition. I am not confident that I can create a final image with a simple composition, I feel i need to try and create an image that is impressive in terms of detail. I need to change the way I look at my own designs but it is easier said than done! I need to shift my focus and try to understand how other practitioners create images that create a connection with the viewer evoking emotion.

The detail in this image is complex and impressive but the characters become lost within the composition. Because of the large amount of information in the image it would be difficult to create a simplified image but I think the composition and colour could be altered to bring the characters to the forefront and make them the focal point. I think this would enable the artist to maintain the scale of the buildings around them and the depth of the water while allowing the characters to have a greater connection with the viewer.

This image is a lot simpler in concept and composition, it feels a lot more personal than the previous illustration. Although simple the use of colour and the posture of the character are well thought. The colour gives the feeling of a holiday at the seaside and the the scenario of dipping your toes in the water is something that just about everyone can relate to. I say holiday because the character does not look like somene with bronze skin who is used to the sunny weather but someone with pale skin that has maybe been in the sun too long. This feeling of heat from the sun adds to the feel of the feet dipping in the cool water and reminds me of holidays to France as a kid.
Obviously these two images are very different in many ways but I think the subtle and simple nature of the second image could be applied to the first. One of the problems with the first is that it is set in a fictional landscape which removes and idea of familiarity with the viewers own personal experiences.
I think in compositions like these it is important to find ways to create a connection with the audience by finding areas of shared experience even in fictional scenarios and landscapes. By creating a connection with the viewers own experiences it the illustrator can create an emotional link between the image and the audience, once this link has been created the illustrator can communicate ideas more easy and in more subtle ways using the viewers shared knowledge of the scenario as a guide.
